He wears Emperor Purple ties so that everyone can see he is an Emperor - he is just borrowing from the Roman Emperors - he is, after all, a historian (Dr. Brown PhD Edinburgh)and would know about these things
The whole Labour front bench turn out in purple these days - looks as if they're trying to distance themselves from Old Labour and the horny-handed sons of toil. It was probably Mandy's idea.
So any ideas for what will replace the Red Flag at the next conference?
As for the picture:
