Cemeteries


This little item in the Telegraph caught Mrs Rigby's eye :-

Britain's Famous Cemeteries

The listing is limited, by necessity, to just ten cemeteries and churchyards.

Mrs R thinks it's worth noting that most big towns have at least one municipal cemetery. Many were established early in Victoria's reign when, due to shifting populations, churchyards became overcrowded.

Many of these cemeteries are now closed for new burials and have become, over the years, havens for wildlife.

    Brookwood is impressive. There was once a plan to bury the entire country there !

    There was even a company formed to do it - the National Necropolis company, and special trains from London with their own platform (yes like Harry Potter) which coffins could ride down to the two special stations ( one for conformists one for non conformists ).

    Haven't visited Brookwood, but it's on the list of must-see places. The history is fascinating and, of course, there are ancestral relatives buried there although it'll probably be impossible to find them now.
